World Rainforest Day 2023

By wedfan, 20 June, 2018

22 June 2023 is World Rainforest Day. It's annually on every 22 June.

Rainforests are rapidly disappearing due to deforestation and atmospheric pollution. Together with the rainforests their plant and animal species are also disappearing. This is not a good thing at all.

There are many millions of species of plants, insects and microorganisms still undiscovered in tropical rainforests. Tropical rainforests have been called the "jewels of the Earth" and the "world's largest pharmacy", because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there. Rainforests are also responsible for 28% of the world's oxygen turnover, sometimes misnamed oxygen production, processing it through photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and consuming it through respiration.

Rainforests are destroyed by illegal and legal logging, and creation of space for palm oil plantations, agriculture and ranching by burning. The slash and burn always goes out of control as long term forest fire, with nobody around or interested to stop it. A side effect is prolonged smoky haze in wide outstretched regional areas. Indonesian rainforest fires, for example, annually put the entire Southeast Asian region into a smokey haze. Urbanization also plays a role, yet apparently less so than logging and burning.

Weddingfans.asia cannot replant a tropical rainforest or replace lost species, and neither can you. But we have planted 1,800 mixed deciduous trees in a rural area, together with local villagers, and the help of our Customer Service supporter JEDI international. The cost was about that of a subcompact vehicle.

A very low cost measure you can take yourself is to pass on using palm oil, regardless of your being an individual or a coroporate user. Just don't fall for it. It is not considered a particularly healthy variety anyway, there are many better alternatives. A less known alternative with much better health chracteristics is made of rice bran. You can also consume less meat, since the space required by animals is often created by clearing rainforest land. Plus all that gas (basically a lot of animal f.a.r.t.i.n.g) which is, in fact, greenhouse gas heating things up.

You can also support civic groups engaged with protecting rainforests.

Rainforests also contain all sorts of bamboo. Our bamboo is not from any rainforest. It is locally abundant here in light rural-type bamboo woods. Bamboo is, in fact, a type of grass, and it grows very vast. Only selected bamboo poles are cut, leaving the rest of the bamboo cluster to expand and regrow the removed pole. This is why we consider it an inherently environmentally responsible material.
